Recently the HBA asked members to share ways they give back to our community whether through donations of money, materials and services or old-fashioned sweat equity. We were pleased, but not surprised, to find out that nearly 100 national, state and local organizations were among the list. They ranged from groups that focus on protecting the environment to providing accessible medical care, to the arts, animal welfare, as well as a cause close to our hearts, homelessness and housing-related needs. One of the additional ways the HBA and its generous members contribute to causes like these is through the HBA benefit home project.
The benefit home is the building of a new construction home mostly — if not entirely — by a sponsoring developer/builder, as well as through donations of construction management, materials, supplies, labor and monies given by HBA members. Once the property is sold on the open market, a portion of the proceeds is donated to a local charity. The 2019 benefit home built by Taylor Morrison in its Crystal Falls community in Leander recently sold, resulting in a nearly $100,000 donation to the HBA’s charity of choice, HomeAid Austin which works with area organizations on building projects such as emergency shelters, transitional housing and other projects across the continuum of care. Ultimately, the 2019 benefit home donation benefited the SAFE Alliance in the building of an emergency drop-in center for survivors of exploitation and trafficking, as well as other important community projects scheduled for 2020.
For the 2020 benefit home, we are lucky to partner with industry leader, Lennar Homes. The home is being built under Lennar’s luxury brand, Village Builders, within The Retreat at Steiner Ranch community in Northwest Austin. The two-story property will be based on its Avondale floor plan. Undoubtedly, the building and sale of this property, once completed, will allow the HBA to make similar donations to select charities this year.
Giving back to our community truly is a hallmark of the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin and we are honored to play a small part in the betterment of our city, state and country.
