With a current female membership of 62 percent in the National Association of REALTORS (NAR), many who are unfamiliar with the organization may ask “why do we need a Women’s Council?” Women’s Council exists because for the first 20 years of NAR’s existence over 110 years ago, women were barred admission from many local REALTOR associations, so a “women’s division” was formed in November 1938 by 37 women from nine states.

Women’s Council is now a national network with roughly 12,000 members. The Austin network established itself in 1957. The local and state networks are 250 plus members strong. Males make up 10 percent of members, and the average income of members from real estate is $134,470 per year.

The council exists today because it is the business leadership skills WCR provides that has positioned it as a leader for the industry, for organized real estate and for political action committees.

Women’s Council’s participation rate in RPAC is the highest in the REALTOR family at 74 percent (versus 33 percent for all REALTORS).

Women’s Council members value their membership because belonging to Women’s Council gives them a sense of professional pride and satisfaction. Women’s Council membership provides members with skills and information to deal with a changing business environment.

WCR Austin just finished a terrific business meeting in May and started June off with a very inspiring workshop with Sandra Dee Robinson who taught us how give our brand a power boost. Next month we are offering Legal I and Legal II classes for free to Women’s Council members. Non-members tickets are $30. We will provide lunch and a happy hour after the class. We have John Harrell coming to speak, great classes and free CE credits, updates from city officials, mixers and fundraisers. Our goal is to continue increasing our membership and build strong leaders in our community and industry. Go to our Facebook page to sign up for classes, meetings and events.
